Does 'American' signify a set of affects, histories, and discourses that are shared by some but not others? This course studies contemporary drama to explore how we might understand our current moment beyond chronology and Americanness beyond national distinctiveness.

Professor of American Literature, University of Fribourg. In the Fall of 2020, this class will be taught at the U of Fribourg on Tuesdays and at the U of Bern on Wednesdays.
We will interrogate the specificity of drama as an art form, the implications raised by repetition, performance, the theatre as a collective activity, and the role of the audience in the determination of meaning on the stage.
