Lewis H. Latimer, né le 4 septembre 1848 à Chelsea, dans le Massachusetts, est le cadet des quatre enfants de George et Rebecca Latimer. George Latimer travaille comme esclave pour divers propriétaires en Virginie jusqu'à la fin de 1842, quelques mois après avoir épousé Rebecca Smith.
