US singer and actor, born 3 May 1903 in Tacoma, Washington, USA. His career lasted from 1926 until his death on 14 October 1977 in Madrid, Spain. He is known for Christmas music, most notably the songs "White Christmas" and "Silent Night", the first and third greatest selling singles of all time.
He introduced four Academy Award-winning songs -"Sweet Leilani"(1937), "White Christmas" (1942),"Swinging on a Star" (1944),"In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening"(1951). Received an Oscar for Best Actor inGoing My Way(1944) and nominated for Best Actor for The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) and for The Country Girl (1954).
