Robert L. Gibson. Robert Lee "Hoot" Gibson (born October 30, 1946), ( Capt, USN, Ret.), is a former American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, and aeronautical engineer. A retired NASA astronaut, he also served as Chief of the Astronaut Office from 1992 to 1994.

Robert L. Gibson was a test pilot and astronaut who flew five missions on the Space Shuttle from 1984 to 1995. He participated in the Challenger investigation, the solid rocket booster redesign, and the first runway landing of Columbia.
