Always a stronger outdoor rider, Carmichael immediately dominated the AMA 250cc U.S. Motocross Championship, winning nine overalls and easily winning the series championship. He was a key part of the Motocross des Nations team, bringing the title back to the U.S. alongside teammates Ryan Hughes and Travis Pastrana.
In 11 years as a professional, Carmichael became the most dominant rider ever in AMA Motocross. He was named AMA Motocross Rookie of the year in 1996, and logged his first full season in 1997, when he won the 125 Motocross Championship.
