Founded as the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and the most successful American vocal band, with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

The principal members were Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Cindy Birdsong.
The name chosen for them by their manager was The Primettes, a sister group to the act that had preceded them, the all-male Primes. After three numbers marked by cautious harmony and some rudimentary choreography, the Primettes left the stage to scattered applause.
Primettes, quatuor initialement constitué de Betty McGlown, Diana Earle dite Ross, Mary Wilson (seule originaire du Mississippi) et Florence Glenda Ballard, alors toutes âgées d'une quinzaine d'années.
Dans ce milieu défavorisé, quatre adolescentes : Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Betty McGlown et Diane Ross décident de monter leur propre groupe : The Primettes. Betty McGlown quitte bientôt le groupe pour être remplacée par Barbara Martin.
