Rodney Whitaker (born February 22, 1968) is an American jazz double bass player and educator. Biography. Born in Detroit, Whitaker attended Wayne State University, and studied with Robert Gladstone, principal bass with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. [1]
His warm sound, unhurried phrasing and swinging melodicism is perfectly suited for high-level exploration of the jazz canon, but here, mainly with the eminent Rodney Whitaker on bass and David Alvarez III on drums, VanHemert offers a new repertoire, reminiscent of the gems rolled out by Sonny Rollins's trio of the late '50s.

Rodney Whitaker I grew up listening to the legendary Rodney Whitaker, and I was honored that he agreed to play for this recording. His omnipresent sound and his time made the recording session a delight.
