Gerard Malanga worked closely for Andy Warhol during the artist’s most creative period, from 1963 to 1970. The New York Times referred to him as “Andy Warhol’s most important associate.” After being introduced by a friend, Warhol hired Gerard because of previous experiences in silkscreening.
Gerard Malanga (born March 20th, 1943) may be the first name to come to mind when discussing Andy Warhol’s numerous assistants, and for good reason. It would be nearly impossible to overstate how crucial a role he played in the development and execution of Warhol’s work during his 7-year tenure from 1963-1970—arguably what many consider Warhol’s creative peak.
Gerard Malanga passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the age of 61. He was born on February 24, 1961 in Montclair, New Jersey where he was raised by the late Lorenzo and Antoinette with his brother Anthony and sister Rita.
