Whilst Jo Stafford never improvised in the manner of a Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald, her vocal style was thoroughly infused with a jazz sensibility and she had a strong sense of swing. So whatever the jazz purists may think, she was in fact a jazz singer - in exactly the same way that Julie London was.
