Divided into six different accounts spanning several centuries, Mitchell ranges from the journal of a 19th-century American notary to the post-apocalyptic memoir of a herdsman, Zachry.
The transcription of her interrogation by a dystopian government occupies two chapters in Cloud Atlas, while the recording of her political ideas becomes the foundation for the religion of the people in the novel’s postapocalyptic middle story. The irony of Sonmi’s story is that she describes her story of liberation from inside a prison cell.
