While this book is certainly an interesting read and I suspect that there is basis for Christina Crawford's claims of child abuse, I'm not 100% sure that Joan Crawford's behavior would have been considered full out child abuse during the time it occurred. As a baby boomer, I remember the discipline in my home and the homes of friends.
