Her family name, Hoshino, adds more depth. Hoshi (spelled with the kanji in Ai's name) means "star", so reading her family name as hoshi no Ai is either "Ai [with the] stars" (a literal description of her Exotic Eye Designs ) or more metaphorically as "Ai the star" (appropriate for her role as an idol; the metaphor of star-as-famous-entertainer is familiar in Japanese).
