Undeterred, in April 1978, Mingus rang again, to say he'd written six songs - provisionally and beguilingly titled 'Joni I-VI' - awaiting her lyrics and voice. Mitchell was "flattered", her then-manager Elliot Roberts recalled in the documentary Woman Of Heart And Mind. Mitchell remembered him warning: "Management begged me not to do it.
Joni would have her moments grappling with fate later, though none so brutal as what Mingus was enduring. There was the story of Joni and Mingus and then there was the story of Mingus and Lester, which starts off the song, and, in a way, closes the circle, too. Finally, the record named for Mingus became a Joni Mitchell record.
Still, Mingus (1979) holds considerable interest for Mitchell fans, both in terms of its historical value and for the haunting, risk-taking nature of the music itself. There’s both an air of intoxication and a pervasive note of sadness to these tracks, as if Joni is serenading Charles’ ghost in some otherworldly nightclub.
