In an act of extreme generosity, he even confesses to a murder he did not commit so as to protect his friend, James, from prison. If We Were Villains is, in many ways, a coming-of-age novel and the character who shines in this capacity is its narrator, Oliver Marks.
James is protective of both Oliver and Wren, who onstage often play his best friend and his lover, respectively. After Richard nearly drowns him on Halloween, James is never quite the same, according to Oliver. Richard targets James more than anyone else, and James’s mental state rapidly worsens both before and after Richard’s death.
James’s typecast is the hero. Oliver ’s roommate and best friend, James is someone that Oliver loves possessively and with a devotion that “transcend[s] any notion of gender.”
An ambitious and unscrupulous character, Edmund is willing to employ any means to power, from betraying his brother Edgar (played by Oliver) to pitting sisters Goneril and Regan against each other. This is the kind of role that Richard would previously have played, now seized by James.
If We Were Villains is the debut novel of American author M. L. Rio, first published in 2017 by Flatiron Books. The novel concerns a murder mystery surrounding Oliver Marks, a former actor at the fictional Dellecher Shakespeare conservatory and primarily takes place during his fourth and final year at the conservatory.
