14 mars 2024 · Equity is ownership, or more specifically, the value of an ownership stake after subtracting for any liabilities (meaning debts). For example, if your home (an asset) is worth $500,000 and you have an outstanding mortgage (a liability) of $400,000, you have $100,000 equity in your home.

Equity can be defined as the amount of money the owner of an asset would be paid after selling it and any debts associated with the asset were paid off. For example, if you own a home that's worth $200,000 and you have a mortgage of $50,000, the equity in the home would be worth $150,000.
Equity is the value of an investor’s ownership of an asset. The concept of equity is most commonly applied to two types of assets: a shareholder’s equity in a company, or a homeowner’s equity in their property. Less commonly, the term equity is also applied to intangible assets, such as the brand equity of a company.
