- What Are Baby Penguins Called
The emperor penguin has the largest body mass of all penguins, which further reduces relative surface area and heat loss. They also are able to control blood flow to their extremities, reducing the amount of blood that gets cold, but still keeping the extremities from freezing.
Penguins have an unusually long oesophagus because their stomach is located so low in their bodies, virtually between their knees. The stomach is a big muscular bag that has a glandular lining in the top part (equivalent to the proventriculus) and a folded, muscular part in the bottom.
The body plumage likewise consists of very short feathers, which minimize friction and turbulence. The density of the plumage and the layer of air that it retains provide almost complete insulation of the body.
Body structure. A penguin’s body plan is highly designed for a marine life. They have streamlined bodies that help to reduce drag in the water and highly modified wings that form stiff, flat flippers that are used to propel themselves through water.
