Jon Sobrino est né au Pays basque et à Barcelone dans une famille nationaliste basque durant la guerre civile espagnole. Entré dans la Compagnie de Jésus à 18 ans ( 6 octobre 1956 ), il est envoyé en 1958 au Salvador .
