    Vithalbhai Patel was elected to the Imperial Legislative Council in 1918. In 1924, he was elected the Member of the Central Legislative Assembly from the Bombay city and became the Deputy Leader of the Swaraj Party. On 22 August 1925, he was elected the President of the Central Legislative Assembly on the retirement of Sir Frederick Whyte.
