Internationally renowned Acadian painter and printmaker Joseph Purcell was born in 1954, and raised in the village of Chezzetcook, on the rugged eastern shore of Nova Scotia. He traces his ancestry back to the founding of the village following the Great Acadian Expulsion of 1755.
Joseph Purcell (1927-2017) Born in Halifax in 1927, Joseph received his art training at the Nova Scotia College of Art. He painted with absolute passion from his earliest childhood into his ninetieth year. Joseph’s chosen mediums were watercolor and oil.
He has established himself as one of the most popular artists working in Atlantic Canada, and his paintings are in collections all over the world including Britain, Continental Europe, the United States, and Australia as well as all over Canada.

Joseph Purcell and Tela Purcell were born in Halifax and trained at the Nova Scotia College of Art. They made their home in Lunenburg in 1951. In 1970 they opened the The Purcell Family Art Gallery and show oils, watercolours, and giclées by, Joseph and Tela Purcell, daughter Julia, & grandchildren.

In his landscapes and seascapes Joseph devotes his full effort to an art that reflects the Atlantic scene. Joseph Purcell’s work has hung in major galleries of Canada, the United States and England. His murals adorn numerous public buildings, historic churches and naval establishments in Canada.
