Christopher Newport (baptized Dec. 29, 1561, Harwich, Eng.—died August 1617, Bantam, Java, Dutch East Indies [now Indonesia]) was a British sea captain who was one of the founders of the Jamestown Colony. Newport went to sea at a young age, and he quickly rose to the rank of a master mariner.
