Desmond Llewelyn was born on 12 September 1914 at Blaen-y-Pant House in Bettws, Newport, Monmouthshire, the eldest child of Ivor Llewelyn, a mining engineer, and his wife Mia (née Wilkinson). He had a sister Mia Noreen born in 1918.
