Ailsa Mellon Bruce (June 28, 1901 – August 25, 1969) was a prominent American socialite and philanthropist who established the Avalon Foundation.
Ailsa Mellon Bruce was a noted philanthropist and patron of the arts. In 1940, she established the Avalon Foundation, which made grants to cultural institutions, colleges and universities, hospitals, youth and community service organizations, churches, and conservation projects.
Mellon returned to Washington in 1937 for the purpose of overseeing the construction of the National Gallery, but he died before its opening in 1941. Ailsa attended boarding school and later Miss Porter's School for Girls in Farmington, Connecticut.
Paul Mellon’s sister, Ailsa Mellon Bruce (1901–1969), was devoted to her father’s legacy and became the National Gallery’s single greatest benefactor during John Walker’s directorship (1956–1969).
22 mars 2024 · Collector and daughter of Andrew Mellon, she acted as her father's hostess in Washington and when he was ambassador to Great Britain. In 1926 she married David K. E. Bruce, who became a distinguished diplomat and also served as the National Gallery's president (1939-1945).
