Intraoperative blood salvage (IOS), also known as cell salvage, is a specific type of autologous blood transfusion. Specifically IOS is a medical procedure involving recovering blood lost during surgery and re-infusing it into the patient.

Blood salvage involves the collection of blood shed from a surgical site and its return to the same individual. This blood can either be washed, typically with normal saline, or can be reinfused unwashed. Washed blood salvage is typically performed in the operating room; whereas most unwashed blood salvage occurs in the postoperative environment.

In the surgical patient, one of the primary methods of blood conservation involves recycling the patient's own blood, with reinfusion back to the patient – a practice called autologous blood salvage or ‘cell salvage’.
