Recorded between 1914 and 1925. MUSIC & ARTS CD1257 (4 CDs) These very first recordings of the music of Edward Elgar have been released before on compact disc – on a five-disc set from Pearl (long since unavailable) with one or two items on issues from Pristine and Dutton.
EMI’s handsome three-volume edition of all Elgar’s electric recordings of his music has long occupied a place of honour on my shelves. How fortunate we are that, until Britten, no British composer - probably no composer at all - was given so many opportunities to record his own music.
