The New Lincoln School was born under remarkable circumstances, flourished during remarkable times, created remarkable changes in the history & philosophy of education, and left a remarkable legacy of individuals & ideas.
Located on North Montgomery Street, the New Lincoln School opened in 1924 as a segregated school for Trenton’s “Negro” students. Containing both elementary and junior high schools, it consolidated students from several other schools in the city where African-American children were educated.
In 1869, the Lincoln School opened its doors as a public institution for colored children for the first time. The school had technically been in existence since 1866 when it was started by the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Lafayette.
