Anna, une riche héritière oisive, est fiancée avec Sandro, un architecte. Alors qu'ils font une croisière en Méditerranée accompagnés d'amis, Anna disparaît au cours d'une escale sur une petite île rocailleuse. Des recherches s'organisent, qui rapprochent Sandro de Claudia, la meilleure amie d'Anna.
Un film qui a bouleversé le cinéma en 1960 avec sa forme et son langage. Anna disparaît sur une île et laisse Sandro et Claudia face à eux-mêmes dans un monde vide et sans sens.
