31 mars 2018 · The band that Hall was joining in 1917 was Sugar Johnny’s Creole Orchestra, and is not to be confused with the much more celebrated Original Creole Orchestra – probably the first real New Orleans jazz ensemble to leave the city, which had toured the South and Midwest widely in the 1910s.

Lil Hardin was only 18 years old when she began to play with Sugar Johnnie’s New Orleans Creole Orchestra in 1917. Within a few years she had established such acclaim that she was invited to join what was to become the most influential and important jazz band of early jazz, Kid Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band.
