  1. John Townes Van Zandt (March 7, 1944 – January 1, 1997) was an American singer-songwriter. He wrote numerous songs, such as "Pancho and Lefty", "For the Sake of the Song", "If I Needed You", "Snake Mountain Blues", "Our Mother the Mountain", "Waitin' Round to Die", and "To Live Is to Fly".

  2. During his lifetime John Townes Van Zandt was beset by a host of demons including alcoholism, heroin addiction, memory loss and bipolar disorder. An inveterate raconteur, he once claimed he'd been dead for an hour and a half before being resuscitated and consequently his brains were scrambled.
