Jan Rubens (1530–1587) was a Flemish magistrate of Antwerp, best known today as the father of Peter Paul Rubens . Family. Rubens was born in Antwerp to Barthélemy Ruben. [1] . He was trained as a scholar and travelled to Italy where he received his diploma in Canon law in Rome in 1550.

Pierre Paul Rubens naît à Siegen en Westphalie, dans le Saint-Empire romain germanique à 300 km d'Anvers. Il est le sixième enfant de Jan Rubens (1530-1587) avocat protestant prospère nommé échevin de la ville d'Anvers en 1562, et de Maria Pypelinckx (1537-1608), fille d'un marchand de tapisseries.
Jan Rubens became in 1570 the legal adviser of Anna of Saxony, the second wife of William I of Orange who at the time lived in Cologne. She later moved to Siegen about 90 kilometres from Cologne. Jan Rubens would visit her there while his family remained in Cologne.
28 June 1577: In the German town of Siegen, Jan Rubens and Maria Pijpelinckx become the proud parents of Peter Paul. Rubens is barely ten years old when he loses his father. He returns to Antwerp two years later with his mother, brother Philip and sister Blandina.
