Launched in 1997 by Sarah McLachlan and a host of other female singer/songwriters, the concert series quickly became one of the most popular, and profitable, tours of the late '90s.
In 1997, Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan set up the travelling music festival Lilith Fair, to disprove concert promoters who thought all-female bills were commercial suicide. Derided by much of the popular music press and dismissed as 'Lesbopoolooza', it was nonetheless a success.
