ZE Records fut créé en 1978 à New York par l'Anglais Michael Zilkha (Z), et le Français Michel Esteban (E). Michael Zilkha, été élevé en Angleterre où il fit de brillantes études couronnées par un diplôme du Lincoln Collège, Oxford University, en 1975.
