Ab 1828 studierte er zunächst in Leipzig und dann in Heidelberg insgesamt zwei Jahre Jura, widmete sich aber mehr seinen literarischen und musikalischen Interessen. 1830 kehrte er nach Leipzig zurück, um Pianist zu werden.
