Preposterous as that one is, it perhaps felt more likely to receive a full production than this delicate but mawkish tale of love, loss and classical musicianship.

Originally conceived as a manga comic strip, written and illustrated by Naoshio Arakawa in 2011, it went on to become an anime TV series in 2014 and by 2017 there were 5 million copies of the comic book in circulation, with its first English translation appearing in 2015.

Despite some awkward lyrics (Carly Robyn Green and Tracy Miller), his music is lovely and creates one of his strongest shows. All of the performances are terrific, but the leading pair of Zheng Xi Yong and Mia Kobayashi really are the heart of the piece.
