The Foundations of the College. Bates was founded in 1855 by Freewill Baptists, first as the Maine State Seminary and later as Bates College. The founders believed that all human potential should be developed, and opened Bates' doors not only to white men — the traditional college population of the era — but also to African Americans and women.
11 juil. 2024 · When Bates opened in 1855, it was New England’s first co-ed college. Since then, we have admitted students no matter their nationality, race, religion, sex, or socio-economic status. While this openness was at the core of our founding identity and principles, it has been tested throughout time and requires us to constantly reflect upon and recommit to our mission.
Lewiston is the second-largest city in Maine. It’s on the Androscoggin River, about 40 miles north of Portland, Maine’s largest city. Lewiston and neighboring Auburn, are former mill towns with French-Canadian roots; a vibrant Somali community; and an entrepreneurial spirit.
