25 sept. 2008 · Martyrs is one of a handful that describes that perspective to the T, and it is the kind of horror movie that you should go in completely clueless about the plot to enjoy the many twists that you won't see coming. A big caveat: this is "advanced" horror -- gut-wrenching, gory and very disturbing. Definitely not for everybody.
Lucie is found wandering the streets bruised and bloodied. Unable to say who did this to her, she's placed in a hospital where she meets Anna, another abused...

Un film à ne pas mettre entre tous les yeux de par sa violence crue et brute, qu'elle soit physique ou psychologique. Cependant, au vu de la réputation de l'œuvre, on peut naïvement s'attendre à un simple torture porn, hors le film n'est absolument pas cela.

11 sept. 2011 · Why Martyrs works is that we the audience don't know it happens, can't even fathom it could happen, until the shocking reveal forces us to question all of our previous mistaken notions. We can then reflect upon the foreshadowing in the very beginning of the movie, when young Anna tells the doctors she knows she is there to help Lucie, and to find the bad people who hurt her.
This film is disturbing, but not in a good way. It's not a horror or a thriller, it's torture porn. There's very little craft here. Virtually zero suspense, intrigue, or artistic merit, just splattering blood for the first half, and a second half that's filled with the most deranged, senseless violence you'll ever see.
