Antananarivo is the capital, largest city and the economic center of Madagascar.It was known by its French name Tananarive or the colonial shorthand form Tana until 1977. The larger urban area surrounding the city, known as Antananarivo-Renivohitra ("Antananarivo-Capital"), is the capital of the Analamanga region and of the Antananarivo Autonomous Province.
Built on a narrow, rocky ridge, Antananarivo occupies a strategic point at the center of the island of Madagascar. Two forts watch over the city from the east and southwest, while within the city limits lay royal palaces, embassies, some fifty churches and a mosque.
