St Albans School is predominantly a single-sex school for boys, but has accepted girls into the sixth form since 1991. It is a member of the Headmasters' Conference of leading public schools. In its earlier days it was known as the Free School of St Albans, City of St Alban Grammar School or St Albans Grammar School.

About forty boys arrive at St. Albans in Form C, the entry level of the Lower School. This form uses team teaching in an open-space setting, an approach that allows for flexible groupings and takes advantage of each teacher’s strengths to make the students’ initiation into the rigorous academic atmosphere of St. Albans a rewarding experience.
St. Albans opened its doors to 34 students in the fall of 1909. A bequest of Harriet Lane Johnston (1830-1903), the niece and first lady of President James Buchanan, had provided for the establishment of an all-boys school and for a scholarship fund for choristers at the future Washington National Cathedral.
