The Symphony No. 1 in D major by Gustav Mahler was mainly composed between late 1887 and March 1888, though it incorporates music Mahler had composed for previous works. It was composed while Mahler was second conductor at the Leipzig Opera in Germany.

In 1966, Mahler biographer Donald Mitchell discovered the omitted movement in an 1893 Hamburg manuscript of the symphony which had been donated to the Yale University library by James Osborn. This movement was published in 1966 by Carl Fischer and is still under copyright in the USA.
