Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1937, is one of more than 560 refuges within America's National Wildlife Refuge System. Sabine is a 124,511-acre (504 km 2) sanctuary, the largest coastal marsh refuge on the Gulf Coast of the United States. It is home to more than 200 species of birds, including ducks, great egrets, geese, Neotropic cormorants, raptors, snowy egrets, wading birds, and shorebirds.

Established in 1937, Sabine NWR consists of 125,000 acres of coastal marsh. Annually this refuge hosts a popular general-access waterfowl hunt on 34,000 acres, most of which must be accessed by boat. Hunters pursue a variety of duck species and have an occasional opportunity to bag a snow goose.
