The Battle of Antietam: The Greatest Action of Ambrose Powell Hill. Because of the Light Division’s late entrance to the battle, it came away with just 63 killed and 283 wounded from the 1,900 soldiers who participated in the battle. Hill’s performance at Antietam was nearly flawless.
This positioned Hill in the midst of the fighting at the Battle of Cedar Mountain on August 9. His counterattack helped to stabilize the Confederate left flank, preventing a route, and contributing to Confederate victory.
When Ambrose Powell Hill was born on 13 March 1785, in Culpeper, Virginia, United States, his father, Col Henry Hill, was 41 and his mother, Ann Powell, was 29. He married Frances Twyman on 9 February 1807, in Madison, Virginia, United States.
