James Cooksey Earp (June 28, 1841 – January 25, 1926) was a lesser known older brother of Old West lawman Virgil Earp and lawman/gambler Wyatt Earp. Unlike his brothers, he was a saloon-keeper and was not present at the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881.
James Earp was different from his gun-slinging lawmen brothers. James worked as a saloon-keeper after his sting in the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War. He was part of Company F, 17th Illinois Infantry, in May 1861.

Earp was the fourth of eight children born to Nicholas Earp and his second wife, Virginia Ann Cooksey. His four brothers—James (1841–1926), Virgil (1843–1905), Morgan (1851–82), and Warren (1855–1900)—as well as a half-brother, Newton, would play integral roles throughout Wyatt’s life.
8 janv. 2011 · James was severely wounded in his left arm during a skirmish in Fredricktown, Missouri. Since he did not have much function in that arm, he did not join in the gunfight. Plus, he was older (40) than his brothers and Doc Holliday, and his age may have played a factor.
