Sous l'impulsion de James Johnston (vocaux, guitare), Gallon Drunk sort son premier album You, the Night... And the Music en 1992 chez Clawfist. Ses touches bluesy, voire jazzy vernissant un Rock décharné font nominer les Anglais pour le Prix Mercury avec leur 2e album, From the Heart of Town, l'année suivante.
Gallon Drunk est revenu et distille de nouvelles couleurs dans un album surprenant à bien des niveaux : « The Soul of the Hour ». Enregistré dans les studios de Clouds Hill, il est produit par Johann Scheerer et en compagnie d’un nouvel acolyte Leo Kurunis à la basse.
