Samuel Baker est né en 1821 et est mort en 1893. C'est un expolrateur et anti-esclavagiste anglais. Après de multiples entreprises commerciales à Ceylan puis en Europe balkanique, en 1861, il entreprend de rejoindre l'expédition de John Speke et James Grant qui cherche les sources du Nil.
