It occurred at one of the most critical moments of World War II: the fourth day of a massive German counteroffensive on Italy’s western coast.
After the war, the airfield continued to be used as a refueling point and on June 23, 1948 the base was renamed “Ernest Harmon Air Force Base” in honor of Captain Ernest Emery Harmon, an Army Air Corps pilot who was killed in an air crash in 1933.
