A Dissertation Concerning the End for Which God Created the World is a work by Christian theologian, reformer, author, and pastor Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) that was started in the mid-1750s but not finally published until 1765, several years following Edwards' death.

To avoid all confusion in our inquiries concerning the end for which God created the world, a distinction should be observed between the chief end for which an agent performs any work, and the ultimate end.
Edwards is widely known for his many books: The End For Which God Created the World; The Life of David Brainerd, which served to inspire thousands of missionaries throughout the nineteenth century; and Religious Affections, which many Reformed Evangelicals read even today.

Thus, Ed-wards’s primary goal in writing the Two Dissertations was to show, on shared as-sumptions, that such “true virtue” is God’s ultimate end in creation. It is the con-tent of the promise to Abraham, the culmination of redemption, the realization of the Kingdom of God.
