RI is a leading Singaporean pre-tertiary institution for boys aged 13 to 18 and girls aged 17 to 18. We run the 6-year Raffles Programme with Raffles Girls’ School. We provide our students with the opportunity, space and support to explore their passions and interests, from research to sport and the arts.
Raffles Institution (RI) is an independent educational institution in Singapore. Founded in 1823, it is the oldest school in the country. It provides secondary education for boys only from Year 1 to Year 4, and pre-university education for both boys and girls in Year 5 and Year 6.
We were founded in June 1823 as the Singapore Institution by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who established the basis for our country's emergence as a major centre of mercantile trade. He sought to establish a premier educational institution that would serve Singapore well.
The gryphon that sits atop the RI crest combines the speed, flight and penetrating vision of an eagle with the strength, courage and majesty of a lion. Ringed by a crown, it symbolises the institution's enduring strength and its trust in the nobility of intellectual endeavour.
