Madanagobalane was the first Professor and Head of the Department and offered M.A, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes in French as well as certificate and Diploma courses in French and German. Since 1998, Russian and Italian languages were taught at Certificate and Diploma levels and as elective courses. In 2004, Spanish and Korean languages were added.
