Né le 4 juin 1945 à Chicago, Anthony Delano Braxton commence à jouer du saxophone alto dès l'âge de quatorze ans ; ses principales influences sont alors John Coltrane, Warne Marsh et Paul Desmond. Il étudie la philosophie et la composition à la Roosevelt University de sa ville natale (1966-1968).
