In 1879, the head of CIM, Hudson Taylor, was recuperating from an illness in the picturesque small port of Chefoo – now called Yantai – near the tip of the dragon's beak peninsula of Shandong in northern China. Taylor had promised to provide education for the children of CIM missionaries.
