The song was inspired by Rita Coolidge , who provided the idea based on her observations of the relationships between female groupies and rock stars during the 1960s.

Rita Coolidge - vocals. Produced by Delaney Bramlett, recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, September 27 – October 10, 1969. Carpenters version. "Superstar" became most popular after its treatment by the Carpenters.
Bonnie, for her part, is credited (with Delaney, Clapton and/or Leon Russell) as co-author of various popular songs, including "Groupie (Superstar)" (a Top 10 hit for The Carpenters in 1971; also covered by ex-Delaney and Bonnie backing vocalist Rita Coolidge, Bette Midler, Sonic Youth, and many others) and Clapton's "Let It Rain."
